Shimokitazawa SHELTER Guide: The Real Live House Behind STARRY in Bocchi the Rock!

A visitor's guide to SHELTER in Shimokitazawa, the real venue that inspired STARRY in Bocchi the Rock!: directions, tickets, drinks, lockers and how to visit respectfully.

SHELTER is one of Shimokitazawa's best-known live houses. It opened in October 1991 as a sister venue of Shinjuku LOFT, run by LOFT PROJECT, and it celebrates its 35th anniversary in 2026. It has long been a stepping stone for indie bands, and in recent years it has also become a pilgrimage spot for fans of the anime Bocchi the Rock!, because it's the real venue that inspired the story's live house, STARRY.

If you're visiting Tokyo for the music, the anime, or both, the best way to experience SHELTER is simple: buy a ticket and see a show.

This is an unofficial guide. We're not affiliated with SHELTER, LOFT PROJECT or the creators of Bocchi the Rock!. Info was checked on October 15, 2026 against public sources. Details can change, so confirm on the official page for your show.

SHELTER and Bocchi the Rock!

Bocchi the Rock! is an anime based on the manga by Aki Hamaji, which aired from October to December 2022. The story is set mostly in Shimokitazawa, and the live house STARRY, where the band Kessoku Band performs and works part-time, is modeled on SHELTER. Fans say the entrance and interior closely resemble the real thing, and SHELTER has even sold collaboration merchandise.

How to visit respectfully

SHELTER is a working venue, in a neighborhood where people live and work. The venue has asked visitors to be considerate, and the points below follow its requests:

Fan guides also point to other locations from the story nearby, such as the Village Vanguard store on the same street and a vending machine across from the venue. The same courtesy applies there.

How to get there

The route below comes from a 2025 visit report. Because the station area has been redeveloped, use a map app too and search "Shimokitazawa SHELTER".

  1. Leave Shimokitazawa Station and walk along the elevated Keio Inokashira Line tracks.
  2. Cross the road and keep going straight.
  3. When you reach Chazawa-dori, turn left.
  4. Look for a staircase leading down to the basement. That's the entrance.

The entrance is easy to miss, so allow a few extra minutes the first time.

Tickets and the door

Tickets are sold through ticket sites such as e+ and through bands' own links. Each show page on this site links to the official ticket or reservation page when one is available. If you're new to how it works, our first-timer's guide explains Adv/Door prices and reservations.

Inside the venue

SHELTER is a single basement floor. The floor is flat with no pillars, the stage is fairly low, and capacity is about 250 standing. That makes for close, energetic shows, but it also means your view can depend on the person in front of you. Arriving early helps if you want a clear spot.

On very busy nights, the crowd can even spill up onto the entrance stairs.

Bags and coats

There are no coin lockers inside, and the room gets crowded. For some shows, SHELTER arranges a cloakroom at a nearby shop and announces it on its X account, so check @shelter_1001 before you go. Station lockers can fill up on weekends, so traveling light is the safest plan.
